Solar water heating, also known as solar thermal, is designed to assist domestic homes with their supply of solar hot water.

Although the system is often called solar heating, very few solar thermal systems do more than just hot water.

Solar water heating helps provide homes with up to 60% of their domestic hot water supply.  This can be used for supplying hot water for everyday washing needs and appliances.

In general solar is not suitable for domestic radiators. Radiators are designed for rapid heat loss and a solar powered system is unable to keep pace.

However you can heat small areas of under floor heating with solar panels by using a thermal store. The number of panels used depends on the surface area you need to heat and the insulation properties of the room concerned.

To heat your home using renewable energy we advise combining solar with a heat pump system. We can also advise on photovoltaic panels if you wish to generate your own electricity.
